We all know that sleep is a fundamental
human process which is necessary for healthy functioning of our body
and mind. Healthy sleep allows our bodies to enter into a
regenerative and restorative state. Our bodies recover from whatever
stresses and strains we have experienced over the course of the day.
Despite being
central to health and vitality, our modern world is suffering from
mass sleep deprivation. While experts recommend that we get 7-8 hours
of sleep per night many of take far less. With late nights and early
mornings we are burning the candle at both ends.
Our system builds up
toxic sleep debt and over time this takes its toll on our bodies –
sapping us of our health, our passion and our vitality. Most of us
cover up our chronic sleep deprivation by abusing stimulants like
caffeine. While few cups of coffee can certainly give us a much
needed boost every once and awhile, when it becomes our crutch to get
through the day, it’s no longer a healthful behavior that will
nourish us.
Our biology is not set up to be well
adjusted to our modern way of life. So many of us are suffering from
insomnia and poor sleep because our way of life co-opts our natural
stress response, amplifies it and never really allows it to turn off
again. The fight or flight response that kept our ancestors alive and
well in dangerous situations becomes overstimulated – each new
stress throughout the day pumps out more adrenaline and more cortisol
into our systems which in the long run, exhaust us.
As we lie to
down to go to sleep at night, our central nervous system is still
jacked up on high alert from the accumulated stress throughout the
day. As we try to drift off we may find our thoughts racing, our
worries looming large and the restful sleep which we so desperately
need eludes us.
What sleep we do manage to get can be fitful and we
can wake up feeling like we have just gone ten rounds with a
heavyweight boxer, having to do it all again. Our bodies simply never
get a chance to recover.
It doesn’t have to be this way
however. Here at NirvanaFitness®, we have developed an
innovative workout strategy that combines the best available
scientific evidence with elements of yoga, breath-work and audio
