The Secret to Super-Charged Schoolwork: Learning to breathe properly

Did you know that the average student takes breaths in and out 23,000 in a single day?


We hear you. You’re asking "That’s interesting but what’s the relevance of such a statistic?” It’s important because of the powerful link between breathing, learning, memory and academic performance.


Unfortunately for the majority of students, the breaths they are taking are short, shallow and only recruiting the muscles of the upper chest.


This pattern of breathing, so common to many of us nowadays, is harming their ability to concentrate, to recall information and has even been linked to reduced academic achievement and mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and ADHD.


Scientists are just beginning to discover the power of proper breathing and it’s relevance within a learning environment but the emerging research is clear – when proper breathing is learned, everything else falls into place.


With so much stress on students to achieve these days unfortunately many of them are developing stress disorders as they attempt to cope with the heavy workload. The stress they are feeling sets off a chain reaction that spirals downward – as they become more stressed, they breath less efficiently which in turn perpetuates the feelings of stress that they are experiencing.


Poor breathing results in a raised heart rate, unbalanced CO2 concentrations in the bloodstream, tension in the shoulders and jaw, reduced ability to endure pain and fatigue as well as increases in catabolic hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.


All of this is obviously not ideal to creating a calm, supportive and positive learning environment. However it doesn’t have to be this way.
